Steady Stream

It’s absolutely amazing outside today. I wanted to get out there all morning. When I finally got out there, I didn’t want to come back inside. The pool was fairly crowded today. Almost everyone was already sharing lanes when I arrived. I split a lane with a guy that seemed to know what he was doing, but really didn’t. It worked out pretty well though, because two girls got out of a lane two down from us and I got to take it for my own. Swimmers kept coming and going the whole time I was there, but nobody ever asked me if they could split my lane.

The pool is getting pretty gross. There’s all sorts of stuff floating in the water these days. It doesn’t make me happy to think about it. I even saw a band-aid on the bottom today. It made me think I should try swimming at the beach instead. It’s an interesting idea, but I doubt it will happen. It’s just too much work to get myself all the way down there and back again (especially back again when I’m covered in salt and can’t really walk or jog it due to the salt).

Chasing Turtles

There is a section of the 56 Bike Trail that crosses under Carmel Country Road and across the river where it is pooled. Sometimes, if nobody has been by for a while, you’ll see a turtle at the edge of the water, sticking his head up onto the bike path. Today as I came across that section, there was a turtle completely out of the water enjoying the sun. I stopped immediately and tried to take a picture, but my phone was sweaty and I couldn’t get it to unlock. While I was struggling to wipe it off and unlock it, someone rode by that put the turtle on alert. As soon as my phone unlocked, he bolted into the water. I may never get a good picture of him, but I’ll keep trying.

I started off my run fairly slowly today, for no particular reason other than I talked myself into a “rolling start”. Maybe it worked, because I felt pretty good the whole run. I wasn’t really fast or anything, but I managed to do pretty well even though I hit a few lights red on my way back up the hill from the bike trail.

No Motivation

Other than a perfectly sunny day outside, I had no motivation to go out and swim. But I did it anyway, and I’m glad I did. There was almost nobody at the pool when I arrived and most of them were on their way out.

Cross Training

My legs were still sore from all the riding the past few days, but maybe running uses a different set of muscles? Isn’t that the whole point of cross-training? I was about to find out.

I hit a couple lights red, but I still managed to keep a pace that wasn’t too ugly. My legs were definitely sore, but I usually only felt it when going up something steep. I can’t close the book on cross-training though, because I have no idea how I would have felt on a bike today. Maybe that would have felt just as fine? Maybe we’ll never know.

Two Memorial Rides

As we headed home from an evening with Ryan and Julie, we talked about doing a ride together this morning (Memorial Day). I passed along my wisdom that the optimal start time for any ride is prior to McDonald’s stopping breakfast service. Ryan called this morning to say they were loading up the car to come up and do a ride with us. We didn’t get out the door until pretty late (11:30). The wind had already picked up, but it was still nice and cool.

We introduced Ryan to the loop up past Lake Hodges, through Rancho Bernardo, and back along Carmel Valley Road. He was much faster than us. I think we were still a bit sore from our big ride just 2 days ago. Ryan was nice enough to wait for us to catch up from time to time. It wound up being a fairly nice recovery ride. I pushed a few times on climbs here and there, but mostly just took it easy and enjoyed the scenery.

After lunch we left Ryan to watch the kids and took Julie on another ride along the 56 Bike Trail. She’s still very new to biking and has only done 3 or 4 rides total. She didn’t want to have to ride from our apartment down to the trail (or back up) next to the fast traffic, so Charmaine and Julie packed their bikes on the car and met me at a parking lot along the trail.

The trail ride was extremely relaxed. We made Julie ride further than she had ridden before, and she seemed to handle the hills better than ever. Hopefully she had fun and wants to keep riding.

When we were done, the girls packed their bikes onto the car while I raced home. They passed me on the final hill, but I took a short-cut from Carmel Country Road directly to the apartment and wound up getting there first. That was pretty cool. I wound up getting two PRs going up the hill, despite having to stop at a red light during the first climb.

Dead Batteries

Charmaine and I went for a big ride with a good amount of climbing today. I made the mistake of not bringing my battery pack to keep my phone charged as we rode. I probably had enough juice to make it home, but when we stopped for lunch in Oceanside I was concerned, so I paused Strava and killed all my other apps. Unfortunately, I forgot to unpause it for the ride home, so it looks like I stopped there at mile 68, but we really rode about 90 miles when all was said and done.

As we started our ride up San Dieguito Road a peloton showed up behind us. We rode tight to the right, expecting them to pass us at any moment, but they didn’t. They didn’t even catch up to us until we hit a red light waiting to turn right onto Via de Santa Fe. I lead the group through the flats and up the first climb on Via De La Valle. Somewhere along the way I realized Charmaine had dropped off the back of the group, so I pulled off to the side and let everyone pass. I thought it would be good for us to ride up Del Dios Highway with the group, but they were pretty far ahead of us. I challenged Charmaine to catch back up to them and during the ride across Paseo Delicias we did.

I had to ride my brakes as we made the descent from Paseo Delicias to the bottom of Del Dios Highway so that I wouldn’t pass the group. That turned out to be very wise. I rode with the group up the two big climbs of Del Dios. The group wound up splitting in two and I kept chasing down the lead group but each time I caught up someone would drop off and take me with them. Eventually I caught up and kept up, but them they all turned right to go south to Rancho Bernardo, but we stayed straight and finished the climb into Escondido.

From Escondido we headed north to Fallbrook. There was a steep climb followed by a steep descent before we made it to Fallbrook. During the steep descent I had a feeling that I shouldn’t trust the road. It had been pretty rough through the flat, but it was smooth on the way up. I rode my brakes a bit, but still got moving pretty fast. It was steep enough that I would have easily hit 45 or 50 mph without riding my brakes. Luckily I didn’t let myself get going that fast, because my front tire unexpectedly went flat in the middle of the descent.

Suddenly I had no control over my bike. I knew something was very wrong. I put on my brakes, and my bike veered to the left. The hill was steep and I was still going really fast. I couldn’t get myself slowed down and I couldn’t stay out of traffic. I don’t remember being so nervous on a ride before. Luckily there were no cars coming either direction. I eventually slowed down enough to regain control and pull my bike to the side of the road. I had a tack in my tire. I certainly didn’t expect that. I thought maybe I would hit a pothole and pinch the tube. I’m just glad I didn’t crash at 30 or 40 mph going down that hill. I’m just glad there were no cars on the road when I couldn’t keep myself out of the lane. I was pretty shaken up. Charmaine changed my tube and I pumped it up with her miniature pump. It worked really well. I took my time getting going again because I was still nervous.

The ride through Fallbrook was really nice, much nicer than I expected. We thought about stopping for lunch in Fallbrook, but we were feeling really good so we rode on to Oceanside. In Oceanside we stopped for lunch at a little place by the beach. It wasn’t very good, but the orange juice was great. While sitting there I noticed my battery was getting low, so I paused Strava and killed the rest of my apps. They took their sweet time getting our food out to us, and by the time we got on the road again I forgot to restart it. So my ride on Strava says I stopped in Oceanside after only 68 miles, but we finished the ride home.

I was feeling really good… almost invincible. I rode up hills like they weren’t even there. I didn’t feel tired at all. I rode up through Del Mar without even breathing hard. It was amazing. I even considered riding the whole bike trail along the 56 before going home, and Charmaine said we could. But I had to pee, so we went home.

Tainted Water

It’s a beautiful day outside today. It’s a little breezy, but close to perfect for swimming. I got to the pool and it was very crowded. There were several people already sharing lanes. It was the exact opposite crowd as had been there just two days ago. Gone were the fast swimmers. Some of these guys were taking as many as two minutes just to complete a 25 yard freestyle. It was ugly.

I took my time walking around the pool and getting my fins and hand paddles out of my backpack, not knowing which was the least-bad lane to share. As luck would have it, lane 2 opened up and I got it to myself. That seemed great at first, but it wasn’t. The kids area is open from lane 1 and there were a bunch of grandparents in there that obviously didn’t shower before entering the pool. I could literally taste their perfume in the water. It was terrible. I didn’t last long.

5k Splits

I was feeling pretty good today when I started my run. I had a nice pace going down around the bottom of the school and all the way up the hill. Normally when I get to the light at Carmel Country Road, I have to stop and wait, which really makes it hard for me to get back into my rhythm (not to mention the time I waste waiting). Today as I approached the light, a car pulled up to go straight. I pushed hard, hoping the light would change by the time I got there. It did. I ran straight across Carmel Country without slowing down. I knew it would be a good run.

As I neared the top of Graydon Road, I felt like I had set a PR for the hill climb. I cut down to the light at Del Mar Heights Road and it was red. I was upset, but not extremely. I needed to catch my breath. When the light turned green, I took off and never looked back. I kept a good pace all the way to the turn-around spot just after the 5k mark. I promised myself that if I set a PR for the 5k, that I could take a break there and just walk home. When I got there, I checked. Yes, I had a new PR for my 5k.

I stood there for a minute, drinking water and washing some salt off my face. Then started walking back. I didn’t really feel like walking, so it quickly turned into a nice slow jog. That was just what I needed. When I got home I felt great.

Sharks at the pool

Every now and then there’s someone really fast at the pool. Today was no exception. When I arrived I saw a girl standing in lane 4 that I’ve seen before. She’s really fast. I can swim faster than she can, but only if we’re both swimming freestyle and I’m sprinting and she’s not. I haven’t ever seen her sprint, but I wouldn’t be too surprised to find out she’s faster than me. But maybe not. We’ll probably never know.

The pool was fairly crowded, but I managed to get lane 6 to myself. There was a slow guy in lane 7 and a fast guy in lane 5. He wasn’t as fast as I am, but he was pretty fast. I started going through my usual routine when a bunch of girls started showing up and sharing lanes with people. I was pulling with my giant hand paddles, so I got to keep my lane to myself.

It didn’t take long to realize these new girls were sharks. They were the fastest swimmers I have ever seen in that pool. I couldn’t keep up with them. The girl in lane 8 was obviously a sprinter. She was barely even touching the water as she flew down the lane.

I was on somewhat of a compressed schedule, so I just got out and went home. I don’t mind losing to a girl every now and then, but when there are 3 girls so fast it makes me feel like I don’t actually know how to swim, that’s too much for me.

Rough Day

Maybe I pushed too hard on my ride yesterday. Maybe swimming after riding yesterday was too much for me. Maybe skipping breakfast because we were out of milk and orange juice was a bad idea. Maybe I just let those things serve as excuses. Bottom line, I had a rough time out there today.

I have been trying to use both RunKeeper and Strava at the same time, because RunKeeper links to my Pebble Watch and displays stats about my run while I’m running. I don’t really like it for anything other than that. Strava is a ton better, and that’s where I log most everything else. Using both at once has never been a problem until today. RunKeeper just kept crashing and uploading little snippets. I almost gave up on it, but it finally started working after I killed everything and rebooted my phone. I lost all the distance I ran before that, but I don’t really care.

After I stopped messing with my phone, I couldn’t find a good pace for about a mile. Once I did I only held it for about a mile or two, then went back to walking. I was really sweating a lot today, even though it wasn’t all that hot. I didn’t even feel super thirsty or anything. Maybe it was just humid. I don’t know. But I do know that I was really wet out there.

I’m not proud of my results, but I’m proud that I made myself go the whole way despite everything else.
