Training Table

It’s been 3 days since I’ve been to the gym or the pool.  That’s pretty pathetic.

Yesterday we closed on our new house.  Today we pick up the keys.  Tonight and tomorrow we’ll start moving our stuff from our “temporary” apartment to the house.  It seems strange to think we’ve been in Utah for more than a full year now.  We hoped to be in the apartment for 3 months, but somehow we’ve been there a year now.  It will be really nice to be in a house again.

After signing all the papers yesterday, we decided to go out and celebrate.  We ended up at the Outback Steakhouse in Orem.  I got the Ouback style Prime Rib.  It was really tasty.  Charmaine got the Alice Springs Chicken, which was also quite good.  The BYU-TCU football game was on all the TVs in the place.  BYU was man-handling TCU.  At the table next to us was a fairly large family that included Merrill J Bateman (former president of BYU).  I thought it was interesting that he didn’t seem to pay any attention to the game.
We went to Training Table for lunch today.  I got a Hawaiian burger, an order of cheese fries with dipping sauce, and a huge rootbeer float.  I probably ate too much.

After we’re done moving I’ll have to come up with a new excuse for why I keep skipping workouts, or else I’ll have to get back to working out.  One thing’s for sure… I can’t keep going out to eat twice a day if I expect to stay in good health.

Goggles of Racing (+1 Aggression)

After that last post, I decided to get some work done. Soon after starting to work, I realized that everything was broken. I decided I might as well swim a little. I went to the gym, got changed, went out to the pool, only to realize that my goggles were not in the swim bag. I must have left them in my regular workout bag, which was in my locker. Instead of going back to my locker to hunt down my goggles, I decided to borrow Charmaine’s goggles, which were in the swim bag.

My goggles are red. Charmaine’s goggles are green. It makes a difference. When I swim with Charmaine’s goggles, it seems fairly relaxing. When I swim with my goggles, I feel driven. I find this very interesting. How can the color of the lense make that much difference? And yet, it does.

Cafe Rio

Another night of little sleep led to another morning of not swimming.  I brought my swim stuff to work with me, but then remembered that we had a lunch scheduled with Kevin Baker.  I had the pork salad and a small drink.  I’ve really got to swim again one of these days.  Actually, maybe I’ll bail out of work tonight and go swim (Charmaine has gone to some training for her work and won’t be home till 8:30 or 9:00).

Strength Returning

I didn’t sleep much last night.  I went to bed late and kept waking up.  I think I’m a bit nervous about closing on our new house later this week.  There may be other reasons as well, but the bottom line is that I didn’t get up and swim this morning.  That means I either swim or lift weights at lunch.

Alex has decided he doesn’t want to swim anymore.  The chlorine isn’t doing great things for him.

We decided we would do our regular Monday workout — Chest. When we got to the gym, Kyle was already dressed and starting his chest workout.  Unfortunately, right about that time, I realized I hadn’t brought my workout clothes, just my swim stuff.  Alex was still convinced that he didn’t want to swim, so we cruised past my apartment and picked up my workout clothes.  Kyle was mostly finished by the time we got back to the gym, but we still pestered him a bit.  Joey’s wife was also at the gym, but we didn’t see her until we were just about finished ourselves.

The nice thing about today’s workout is that I saw my strength returning.  It took a long time to build it up the first time, then it went away quickly, but it seems to be returning just as quickly.  Now if I can just figure out how to stop the weight gain and turn it into weight loss again.

Two Miles

Last Saturday I made 3000 yards, but the last 600 or so was fluff to make sure I hit 3000 yards.  Today I wasn’t going to settle for that.  I wanted to earn my yards today.  Actually, I wasn’t really in the mood for swimming when I first woek up, but Charmaine convinced me to go.  She ran on the treadmill for a while and then swam with me for the last 1600 yards.

Another Day Off

I’m still walking sort of funny, but that’s not why I didn’t swim today. It’s Friday, and we usually go out to lunch on Fridays. I wasn’t planning on going to lunch today, though. Today we had our final walkthrough with Ivory Homes on our new house. It was scheduled for 4 hours (from 2:00 to 6:00). So I wasn’t planning on swimming at lunch. If I was going to swim, it had to be before work.

I guess the stress of the final walkthrough and the possibility of forgetting something important that we wanted them to fix made it hard to sleep last night. It also rained like mad. In fact, when I go to the house at 1:55, there was still some snow on the roof of the house next door. Yes, I said snow. It’s not supposed to snow in September, and if it does, it’s certainly not supposed to snow low enough to get on houses.

The combination of multiple days of rain (and a bit of snow and hail) made the walk around the outside of the house very muddy. We all took our shoes off on the front porch for the rest of the walkthrough. Ron, the neighborhood supervisor for Ivory, has been great to work with through the entire process. Today was no different. Everything we pointed out or asked for, he agreed to fix. Charmaine was thoughtful enough to get a gift certificate or traveller’s check or something to say thanks. I was very impressed.

The house looks really good. I may be slightly biased due to the fact that I am ready to move in this very moment, but I really do think they’ve done a good job overall. There are still some things that I’m not impressed with, but none of them are a huge deal. I sort of wish I had thought about blogging the house building project from the beginning. We did take a lot of pictures along the way, but capturing the just-in-time emotions at each step is no longer possible. So that project can’t ever happen. If we ever build another house (probably likely, even though I dread the though of it) I’ll probably blog all about it.

Spaghetti Factory

Having Lasagna for lunch counts as working out, right?

One of the meetings yesterday was between our CEO and the members of my team. Joe and Alex have been fairly vocal about their unhappiness as of late and Martin (our CEO) wanted to discuss it. We talked about the individual items that were contributing to their unhappiness, the ways we can go about solving the issues, etc. The consternation isn’t limited to Joe and Alex, of course, but they are some of the only people voicing their unhappiness in public. In this case “in public” means in my office, with the door open, while other people walk by and wonder what all the commotion is about.

Today our office manager wanted to take my entire team out to lunch, presumably so she could add her two bits to the ongoing conversation. I told her I thought it was a bad idea, but she still wanted to do it. I imagine her boss (our director of HR/Operations) put her up to it, because it seemed fairly out of place for her to even take a break for lunch.

Joe called in sick today, so it was just me, Alex, and Tracy. I drove us all to Spaghetti Factory. I had the Lasagna, a garden salad with pesto dressing, and a bunch of the complimentary sourdough bread.

The lunch conversation was sort of interesting. We only spoke briefly about the issues facing my team, before Tracy vented a bit of her own steam. Alex seemed to be in a better place today, so maybe it was helpful after all. I hope so.

On a side note, both Alex and I were extremely sore today. I think this is the worst of the pain from our pathetic leg workout on Tuesday. Hopefully I’ll feel like swimming again by tomorrow morning.

Better Late Than Never

We had a big mandatory company meeting this morning. I wanted to be there a little early, so I decided I wouldn’t get up to swim in the morning. I didn’t sleep very well. There was a lot of rain and other random noises throughout the night. I kept waking up and wondering what time it was.

The meeting went well, but it spawned some other meetings that happened right after the first meeting. This led to my being in meetings until about 1:15. At that point nobody wanted to go lift weights, which was fine with me. I wanted to swim anyway and it worked out so that I could. I didn’t want to be away from work too long, which made a nice excuse for cutting the swim a bit short.

Legs Like Jello

Joe continued to feign depression and was trying to round up a group of people to go to lunch with him. Alex had already agreed when I got to him. After a few minutes of persuasion, I was able to drag Alex to the gym for legs day.

Everything I said yesterday about losing strength quickly applies doubly to leg strength. I had to roll out of the leg press machine at one point. It was really pathetic.

I thought we might run into Jeff and Steve, but they were nowhere to be seen.
