Starting Early?

I was just about to congratulate us for starting the garden early this year, but then I saw the date on last year’s “first planting” post… 3/23. We’re only 8 days ahead of last year? It feels much more like winter this time around. I’m still glad to be starting.

After our experience trying to grow peppers from seed last year, it is obvious that we need to start earlier than we think. Even the package of seeds says to start them 8 to 10 weeks before you can plant outside. Looks like we may need to start even earlier next year. But this year we have a few secret weapons that Charmaine picked up during her Master Gardener course last fall.

Instead of sacrificing all available kitchen counter space all spring long, we decided it was time to build a seed starting rack. We picked up what I call a “Baker’s Rack” (it looks like it would be great for cooling baked goods) at Home Depot. We also grabbed a cheap shop light and some fluorescent bulbs to act as grow lights. We didn’t buy “grow” lights as the research done at USU indicates they only cost more than regular light bulbs, but they perform the same. A little bit of chain and we had our adjustable height grow rack. We’ll probably need to add more shop lights, but we’ll wait and see how it goes before we get too crazy.

After putting the rack together and preparing some seed beds, we planted the first wave of peppers in a heated seed bed.

The other seed bed isn’t heated, but it has room for a lot more seeds… maybe 200 or more. It was a real chore getting the dirt in the seed beds on that one, but at least it’s ready for next week.

Garden update 2009-07-29

While it has been nice to compare the current garden to last year’s results, I realize that won’t be possible next year unless I get some photos posted. Since we still haven’t replaced our dead camera, I have decided to start taking pictures with my iPhone. Its camera sucks, but at least we’ll have something to look at this time next year.

I’m also motivated to do it now that I’ve installed the iPhone WordPress app, which is what I’m using right now. I guess we’ll see how it turns out. If I don’t like it, this may very well be the last post till we replace our camera… and who knows when that will happen.

Peeking Out

The seed pouches claimed we would start seeing sprouts 7 to 10 days after we planted them. It’s been 7 days. We are indeed seeing sprouts. So far we’re just starting to see some tiny tomatoes poking their necks out (their heads are still in the dirt).

The good news is that we got our camera back, so I can finally post a few shots of the planters.

Week 16

The word for this week is weather. It’s been cold (we had visible snow half way down Lone Peak and Timp for a couple days), and extremely windy. A bunch of the corn blew down again. Some of the zucchini and yellow squash plants were ripped almost out of the ground. Most of the squash plants lost leaves in the wind, etc. It was an awesome few days of storminess.

The storm also seems to have slowed down the rate of new fruit forming. I’m not sure if the storm just kept the bees away, or if the cold actually slowed the plants down. Either way, the harvest was a little slower this week. The only real bright spots were that the good tomatoes (fruit that formed after the irrigation pump issues we had earlier this year) started to ripen and the peppers are rolling right along.

Picked this week (6 days – we went a day late last time):
30 Red Peppers (ask Joe or Lin if they have any heat)
2 Green Peppers
8 Zucchini
13 Yellow Squash
2 Turnips
6 Cucumbers
20 Pear Tomatoes
4 Roma Tomatoes
3 Tomatoes
90 oz Beans
4 oz Green Onions
12 Beets
12 oz Carrots
27 ears of Corn
3 Spaghetti Squash
1 Hubbard Squash
5 Jack-Be-Little Pumpkins

Week 15

I find I’m not willing to take as many pictures of things outside now that everything is looking the same from week to week.

The yellow squash have slowed down a lot this week, almost to a manageable level, but the zucchini have really taken off… it’s almost like they’re trying to catch up with the yellow squash.

We picked another round of corn today, but I doubt we’ll cook it till tomorrow. The previous set of corn was amazing. The beans are always excellent. But we still haven’t had much luck eating turnips.

Picked this week (8 days, since I’m a day late):
108 oz (6.75 pounds) Beans
4 Bell Peppers
18 ears Corn
13 Zucchini
11 Yellow Squash
12 Cucumbers
1 Lemon Cucumber
10 oz Carrots
7 Tomatoes
6 oz Green Onions
3 Turnips
2 Jack-O-Lantern Pumpkins
2 Jack-Be-Little Pumpkins
1 Sugar Pumpkin
1 Spaghetti Squash
1 Hubbard Squash
